Landscape Performance, Flowering, and Seed Viability of 15 Japanese Silver Grass Cultivars Grown in Northern and Southern Florida

چکیده
Japanese silver grass (Miscanthus sinensis) and 14 cultivars were transplanted in northern and southern Florida and evaluated for landscape performance, fl owering, growth, and seed viability. All plants survived the 84-week study at both locations with the exception of ‘Morning Light’, where 22% to 33% of the plants died. In northern and southern Florida, ‘Arabesque’, ‘Adagio’, ‘Cosmopolitan’, and ‘Gracillimus’ received the highest visual quality ratings on average throughout the entire study, yet other cultivars such as ‘Central Park’ and ‘Silberfeder’ performed well but had much narrower windows of peak performance. Cultivars such as ‘Little Kitten’ and ‘Sarabande’ performed far better in southern Florida than in northern Florida. Regardless of location, ‘Morning Light’ and ‘Puenktchen’ generally did not perform as well as other cultivars. In northern Florida, four consecutive months of very good to excellent fl owering (75% to 100% canopy coverage) were observed for ‘Adagio’, ‘Arabesque’, ‘Cosmopolitan’, ‘Gracillimus’, ‘Little Kitten’, ‘Sarabande’, ‘Silberfeder’, and ‘Zebrinus’. However, in southern Florida, peak fl owering periods for these cultivars were delayed and generally only lasted for 1 to 2 months. On average, plants in northern Florida were larger and produced 2.8 times more fl owers than plants in southern Florida. All cultivars produced viable seed with germination of viable seed ranging from 53.6% (‘Cabaret’) to 100% (‘Gracillimus’) in southern Florida, and from 49.8% (‘Arabesque’) to 100% (‘Adagio’, ‘Little Kitten’, ‘Sarabande’, and ‘Variegatus’) in northern Florida.

The Effect of Flowering Time on Seed Dormancy Breaking of Almond
Seed’s dormancy is considered as one of the effective factors in seeds germination and consequently in the growth of seeds of many plant species. Shortening the dormancy period and enhancing the germination percentage in fruit types could be a valuable strategy for the seed researchers and plant nurseries. In this research the seeds of mature fruits of different almond cultivars including late-...
متن کاملEffect of Heat Stress Duration on Growth, Flowering and Electrolyte Leakage in Four Cultivars of Calendula officinalis
In the floriculture industry, the need for heat tolerant bedding plant cultivars is increasing because of the rising temperature around the world. A pot experiment was carried out to examine the impacts of four heat stress durations (0, 7, 14 and 21 days) on growth and ornamental traits to determine the relative heat tolerance of four cultivars of calendula (Calendula officinalis). Growth and d...
متن کاملConservation Practices in Western Oregon Perennial Grass Seed Systems: II. Meadowfoam Rotation Crop Management
Rapid changes in practices used to produce perennial grass seed crops in the U.S. Pacific Northwest region and shortened lengths of time that perennial grass seed fields remain in production have increased the need for additional rotation crops that are adapted to the poorly drained soils found in western Oregon. This research was conducted at three sites to determine ways to manage meadowfoam ...

This experiment was conducted to study the effect of cocopeat: perlite medium with three ratios (v/v) (1:1, 3:1 and 1:3) on some vegetative, flowering and biochemical parameters of two gladiolus cultivars (Strong and White) under soilless conditions in 2016. Data indicated that most vegetative parameters expressed as plant height, leaf number and leaf area, flowering parameter such as spike eme...
متن کاملGenetic variation in the flowering and yield formation of timothy (Phleum pratense L.) accessions after different photoperiod and vernalization treatments
Timothy is a perennial forage grass grown commonly in Boreal regions. This study explored the effect of vernalization and photoperiod (PP) on flowering and growth characteristics and how this related to changes in expression of three flowering related genes in accessions from different geographic origin. Large variation was found in accessions in their vernalization and PP responses. In souther...
